I’ve been hunting since 2002, and this is the smallest of 4 bucks I’ve shot over the years. It’s a young 8 point that I shot Saturday morning at about 8:35. I had seen a big buck several hundred yards away earlier in the morning, but I didn’t have a shot. I was just about too cold to stay any longer, when I heard something thrashing through the leaves on the other side of the fence. I looked over and saw the white tail of a deer, but thought she was spooked and I had no shot. Then, out of nowhere, she came down the hill, jumped the fence and stepped out in front of me. It was a doe. I was going to shoot her for the meat, then I heard a grunt and looked behind her and this buck had just jumped the fence. She was “in heat” and he was “rutting” her hard. He was grunting with every step. The doe spooked a little, so I figured the buck would too, but he didn’t. He stepped out from behind a tree about 50 yards from my stand, and I manuevered around to get a steady shot. I made alot of noise but he was so focused on the doe, he didn’t even know I was there. So I got steady on him and squeezed off the shot. He ran about 30 yards and went down. That’s pretty much the story!
