Twitter 101

What the heck is Twitter? For those that don’t understand Twitter.com, welcome to Twitter 101.

The funny thing about Twitter is that it is So Simple that people get confused, because they expect it to be more complicated.

Okay, time to start class…

Twitter.com is what is known as a microblogging service, an online place where you can ‘post’ short messages, or ‘tweets’ of 140 characters (including spaces).

Your ‘tweets’ simply answer the question of What are you doing?”

You could write exactly what you’re doing at that particular moment in time, link to an interesting Web site, or just write something random like that you love to eat pizza on Tuesdays.  Whatever you want!

These ‘tweets’ can be read by anyone who is ‘following’ you (essentially, subscribing to your tweets).

Similarly, you can ‘follow’ (subscribe) to the tweets of anyone you want, from friends and family to favorite celebrities, Web sites, and radio station!

The ‘tweets’ of your followees show up in a main feed right on Twitter’s main page, one after the other in chronological order.

And that’s it… pretty simple huh? There are more applications on Twitter that allow you to do more things, (like share pictures and stuff) but that’s in Twitter 102.

The reason why Twitter became  so popular was because of all the celebrities that started using it regularly.  Fans like feeling connected to their stars, and knowing what their doing in their everyday lives.  Plus, they brought it a lot of media attention for the site.

Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGenerous, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift were some of the first big names to really utilize Twitter, and gathered the website a lot of attention.
