Thank God for the Tigers

I don’t know any one who’s not a sports fan.  I’m sure there are those who have no problem sleeping after the Cards’ bullpen blows yet another lead; can actually enjoy the rest of their Sunday after watching a sorry excuse for a football team play; but I don’t know any.  To coin an over-used phrase, I live for sports.

I grew up in St. Louis, so I bleed Cardinal red and love helments with horns.  Boy is it tough at the moment.  I’m sure just as tough for my fellow Show-Me Staters who bleed Royal Blue & love the excitement of being at the “Home of the Chiefs…Chiefs…Chiefs”.

But hey sports fans, it’s really not that bad.  You see, like most of you, I was also raised in a Mizzou-crazy family.   My father’s favorite player growing up was Paul Christman, then as an adult, it was Roger Wehrli “from King City” – my Dad also played football for a little town in Northeastern Missouri – so #22 going to Mizzou was big news (even better when Roger came to St. Louis & played for the Football Cardinals).  When visiting Grandma & Grandpa’s farm in Cole Camp for Thanksgiving, the iced tea was always served in MU glasses celebrating the 1969 season.   Perhaps you have a set?  They were kept in the china cabinet and only came out for special occasions.  It’s a tradition my Mother continues to this day, though I get tired of seeing that Orange Bowl score (Penn St. 10 vs. Missouri 3) as I drain my tea.  That score just never changes!

So thank God for the Tigers.  What would we sports fans do without you?  You’ve not only captured our hearts, but you’re helping us survive during this dismal sports season developing on both sides of the state.  So God Bless you boys.  We may never see another Missouri team like you again in our lifetime.  Let’s enjoy the ride.

I’m also looking forward to new iced tea glasses that have printed on them…

Big 12 North Champs…Big 12 Champs…BCS Champs.

I’ll never get tired drinking from that glass!
