Finally, Taylor Swift won her first-ever MTV Video Music Award and she had her triumph literally snatched from her hands by Kanye West.
The rapper stormed the stage just after the first award, for Best Female Video, was presented to Taylor Swift for her video for “You Belong with Me”. He cut her off, grabbing the mic and protesting in support of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” video.
Taylor was literally speechless as Kanye gave her the microphone back and marched off stage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. The audience booed at Kanye’s rude behavior and then began to clap in support of Swift after West left the stage.
Feeling the awkwardness of the lingering moment, MTV VMA producers cut to a taped video clip of “30 Rock” star Tracy Morgan and rapper Eminem while Taylor tried to continue her acceptance speech — but couldn’t be heard. Her mike was cut off. Giving up, she strolled off stage.
According to reports from inside the house, once cameras cut away from the action, West flipped off the crowd and returned to his seat. During the next commercial break, Pink walked by the rapper and appeared to shake her head in disgust before security escorted her away. West remained steadfast amidst the commotion as he kissed his girlfriend Amber Rose.
Taylor didn’t just earn support from the crowd. A number of stars took to their Twitter pages to support Taylor. Even President Obama had some words to say about Kanye.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Kanye has stormed a VMA stage because he didn’t like the results inside the envelope. Read more here.
Later in the show, when Beyonce won best video of the year, she said, “This is amazing. I remember being 17 years old, up for my first MTV award with Destiny’s Child and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life, so I would like for Taylor to come out and have her moment.”
Later in the night, West posted an apology on his blog:
“I’m sooooo sorry to taylor swift and her fans and her mom. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers! …………………… i’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!……………. beyonce’s video was the best of this decade! He is not sincere in his apology. He went back AGAIN and talked about Beyonce’s video. He did a lot of talking but none of it was a true apology. You cant say I am sorry then in the same breath still talk about how Beyonce’s video was the best. You are a jerk and have lost a lot respect from you fans.

That is so typical of someone that “THINKS” someone else “SHOULD” have received the award. GREAT job Taylor!!! We love you and keep on singing…I love listening to you and your music…
