We’ve heard the phrase “Go Green” a million times, but how do you “Go Green?”
Here are some easy ways to make a big difference….
Forget paper or plastic – bring canvas bags to the grocers (many will provide you with a small credit for your good deed)
Recycle. Aluminum, plastic, paper and glass. Also recycle appliances, clothes and other items by donating to charity organizations.
Use rechargeable batteries.
Buy recycled products. Post-consumer recycled plastic and paper products are bountiful in stores. (Sometimes there is a small premium for these items.)
Help clean up creeks, parks and other areas where plastic ends up.
Stop Idling. Overall, Americans idle away 2.9 billion gallons of gas a year, worth around $78.2 billion.
Turn Down the Thermostat. For every degree you lower the thermostat, you’ll save between 1 and 3% of your heating bill.
Wash Your Laundry in Cold Water. 90% of the energy used by washing machines goes into heating. The higher the water temperature, the higher cost to you and the planet.
Buy large bulk containers of laundry detergent and soaps, refilling smaller containers around the house.
Pay bills online. Paperless billing not only saves trees; it also eliminates the fossil fuel needed to get all those billing envelopes from them to you and back again. Plus, you’ll save money on stamps.
Try walking, biking or carpooling to conserve gas.
Unplug appliances when your aren’t using them.
REDUCE, REDUCE, REDUCE. Avoid unwanted mail. Contact the sender via email or fax that you wish your name removed from their list. Receive statement and bills via email and pay on-line. Remove unwanted catalogs by going to visiting catalogchoice.org
