Jimmy Fallon’s ratings have been less than robust as host of “Late Night”, but I hope NBC gives him some more time to grow into it because either he, or his staff, or both come up with some really funny stuff occasionally.
Letterman was pretty out there as the show’s first host in ‘82. (Remember Stupid Pet Tricks, or throwing watermelons off of a building?) But he was given time to develop the show and his style.
But it’s a different world today, and corporations need return on their investments now. Whether it’s TV hosts or Country singers, they’ve got to prove themselves sooner rather than later. Companies don’t have time to wait for them to develop.
And I get that, there’s a lot of money involved. But I hope Fallon gets some more time. Because along with the ample comic skills of Brian Williams, I think this is just a block or two south of Genius St.
